Was Salisu Yusuf really suspended for bribery?
When the name Salisu Yusuf is mentioned, the thought that comes to the minds of many people is about a national team coach who accepted bribes to field players in his team. To some, such a coach should not come near football anymore. But is that view right? Was Salisu suspended for taking bribes?
Salisu Yusuf was suspended, not for bribery, but for accepting gifts and this is against FIFA’s code of ethics for coaches
In the video which indicted him, Salisu made it clear to those who gave the gift that the players were already his first team players. So if the gift was intended to be a bribe, it was inconsequential. He was suspended because it was the proper punishment, statutorily
He served his ban and is back.
Should that stop him from getting more national team jobs? Perhaps not. He has learnt his lessons: do not accept anything from anyone, even a candy, when on national duty. He never asked for the gifts which he accepted. His offense was accepting gifts on duty and that is against the ethics of his job
He has been made the assistant coach of the Super Eagles, CHAN team first coach and U-23 Eagles first coach.
Salisu is still the country’s most successful home based team coach as he took the team to the WAFU Cup final and the CHAN tournament final
