When evil lasts, it becomes a tradition. When it is not nipped when it reared its ugly head early on, it rips a community apart and can destroy lives.
Recently, there have a surge of rape cases in the country, carried out by friends of victims, neighbors, even strangers. More often than not, there are starting points for rape. First and foremost, it starts from the mind. There are many precursors of rape.
One of them is when a young man holds a young woman’s hand in public against her will. Sometimes the young man takes it as a joke. While the girl pleads to go, the young man is unyielding, sometimes he squeezes the girl’s hand or tries to hold her intimately in public, against her will. He calls it a joke, to the young girl, it is embarrassing
When a young man makes it a habit to rough handle women in public against their will, always trying to get intimate, even when the lady refuses the public show of affection, they refuse and persist. Sometimes the ladies often scream and may hit the young men. To the young man, it is fun. Sometimes people around the scene laugh and make fun of it. For example, on Tuesday, 2nd June 2020, I went to repair my phone. A young man approached a girl who was selling SIM cards by the road side and grabbed her. It was a busy road with heavy traffic. They know each other though. The lady screamed and asked the young man to leave her as that was in public but he hugged her more. The people around only laughed and made fun of it. The girl had to let herself off the hook in an unusual way. She sunk her teeth in the man’s chest, while the man was in pain she ran away. I said to myself that that scenario was dangerous to society. If he could do that in public while people cheered on, what would he do in private?
When young men objectify young women and see them as a tool to gratify their selfish desires.
When men openly use derogatory slang about ladies
There is yet another way this could start. As the debate and public outcry about rape rages, there are people who will come under a post on social media or publicly to say that women should dress properly. Some even argue that it is the young ladies that induce the men to do what they do.
Granted, women and men should dress properly. However, when someone comes out publicly to defend rape or to shift blame to the victim, that is a major precursor to rape
People who exhibit such traits above are dangerous to society and have a high tendency to rape others
