Wikki Tourists coach, Abubakar Adamu says he is one hundred percent sure that his team will survive relegation this season. He spoke shortly after his team battled Abia Warriors to a 1-1 draw in Aba on Sunday
Though Adamu expected more from his team in the first half, he was happy with the team’s resurgence in the second half.
“Yes, it was a deserved result, even though when you look at the first half, the boys did not play very well but in the second half when we made corrections and amendment in the team, they picked up and played to our expectation.”
He said that the issue of battling for form in the current abridged season is not peculiar to his team as others are struggling too. When asked about his chances of being named the substantive coach of the side, he recalled how he helped the team in the 2019-2020 season.
“When you look at the teams generally, not only Wikki Tourists Football Club. Rangers, Nasarawa, are still battling to cope with the abridged league and by getting the result at home and this one, it boosts the morale of the players and we are hoping that before the end of the first round, we are going to stabilize in the league.
I could remember in 2019-2020 season, I was the one that rescued the team from going to relegation and yet we are still on it, trying to see if we can give our best to our state.”
Adamu’s substitutions reinvigorated his side, especially with the rampaging Fuad Ekelejuoti, Manu Garba who provided the assist and Abdulsalam the goal scorer. He had good words for his boys.
“All of them contributed positively to our development today. That is the reason why if you don’t have quality players sitting on the bench that can change situation, you find it very difficult to play. When you look at the first half, the boys did not play to our expectation but the bench studied what we wanted and came in during the second half and made the difference.”
As for the relegation battle, Adamu kept it short, yet confident.
“Definitely, it’s one hundred percent sure, we are going to escape.”
