Madagascar pulled one of the greatest upsets in African football history this evening as they beat Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2-0 in their last group game of the African cup of nations in Alexandria, a game pundits had already given to the Eagles.
Surprisingly, Madagascar are ranked 108th in the world and are competing in the tournament for the first time.
Goals from Lalaina Nomenjanahary and Carolus Andriamahitsinoro settled the clash in Alexandria as Madagascar surprisingly finished on top of Group B. Lalaina got the better of Troost Ekong who failed to control John Ogu’s pass in the 12th minute to put the ball beyond Ikechukwu Ezenwa who was in goal. http://www.bellsnews.com/sports/madagascar-massacre-oh-my-super-eagles/
It was a first half to forget for the Super Eagles as the midfield combination of John Ogu, Etebo and Mikel failed to create the spark in the middle. Lalaina’s goal gave his team impetus going forward as they dominated the game thereafter and the possession of the Nigerians.
Nigeria had already qualified and needed just a point to be group winners. With this result, Nigeria may face Ghana in the round of 16.
Samuel Kalu came close to scoring but curled an effort wide as Nigeria sought a quick response but even though they controlled possession, they struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Samuel would later had his penalty appeal overlooked by one of Africa’s finest referees, Papa Gassama.
Madagascar doubled their lead in the 53rd minute as Andriamahitsinoro’s free-kick took a wicked deflection off half-time substitute Wilfred Ndidi.
The deflection wrong-footed Ezenwa before bouncing in off the right post.
The introduction of Iwobi in place of the uninspiring Mikel gave attacking flair to the Eagles but Madagascar were resolute at the back. Not even the introduction of Moses Simon could break the deadlock .
This is a Super Eagles that allegedly boycotted their training session before the Guinea game and were paid $10,000 upfront for today’s game.
