Majek’s magic. The rain god that came to Aba…
In the late 1980s or perhaps early 1990s, Majek Fashek came to Aba and lit up the city named eponymously after the elephant. Since the old pop musics that followed the 1970s postwar decade for which the city became popular, never had the city seen such verve, burst of energy and electrifying artistic mastery blended in one stsge.
First, Majek sang some of his songs at the Aba Sports Stadium (what is now Enyimba International Stadium) mesmerising Aba fans, but when he brought out a fowl, swayed from one corner of the stage to the other… The rain started coming. He had commanded it to come with his magnum opus, Send Down the Rain. It was not even a cloudy day so to speak.
Once, with childlike faith, Aba agreed that the god of rain indeed was in her mist and even as of today, those who saw the show still believe that Majek went about with natural power over rain.
Many, even those who missed the show, were left wondering: “What manner of man is this that even the rain obeys his voice?”.
Rest in peace the rainmaker!
Like the rain you will reign here!
