…Fans hail team on good start.
Red- hot Edo Queens Football Club of Benin this evening went toe – to – toe with FC Robo of Lagos in the first match of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Women Football League NWFL new season as they taught the visiting Ladies Lagos a bitter lesson with a convincing 4-1 victory at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Wednesday evening.
Edo Queens who are one of the top women teams in Nigeria got the opener courtesy of a low powerless shot taken from outside the box by Kafayat Mafisere, in the 16th minute of play.
Five minutes after the first, Eunice Godwin, another fearless striker with ball sense gained a loose ball from Esther Moses’s deflected shot to double the lead for the Benin-based team, placing her effort beyond the reach of Robo’s goalkeeper, Ndubuisi.
The Emmanuel Osahon, girls from Eko City, in the early part of the second half made some dangerous attempts against the home team and their push paid off in the 63rd minute as Favour Nkwocha pulled one back from her team putting the score – line 2-1.
Just before they knew what was happening, in a split of two minutes, Eunice Godwin cut short the team’s celebration by heading home Kafayat Mafisere’s kick making it 3-1 for the host side.
Substitute, Rebecca Ajimuda the prolific left winger, got an assist to her name when she became the provider for Esther Moses, to net the home team’s fourth goal of the game. This last goal actually ended FC Robo’s hope. Edo Queens made the game difficult for top FC U- 20 National team player Esther some of the dreaded top strikers to get into the game. Every efforts made by these dangerous forward was being brutally frustrated by Edo Queens defense Ace Valentino Uroko aka ‘The Bull’ who is now one of the best defender in NWFL presently.
Edo Queens who sits on top of Group B will travel to Port Harcourt next week to face former champions, Rivers Angels on match day two of the season.
