The Honourable Minister for Youth and Sports Development has advocated public-private-partnership for the growth of sports in the country. Mr Dare said this in an interview with journalists in Yenagoa, he outlined the need for Federations to align with public private partnership (PPP) initiatives .
The working minister as he is fondly called by many, emphasized the need for sports Federations to utilize the PPP initiatives
“Modern Government cannot and does not fund everything hundred percent. In fact, we are behind. In some other countries , private sector funds sports development. It is only when they go for international [or] continental competitions [that the] government comes in.”
“But we have a working arrangement with the federations; they elect their board members, we are able give them some percentage of the funds they need and they have independence to source for funds as well.
“The government doesn’t necessarily demand from them, ‘how did you get the funds, how did you spend it.’ They have that independence, but we are able to merge and the government has done considerably well.
“It’s a joint partnership, we are trying to develop a business model around sports, to bring private money into sports just like we have in Europe, America and Canada we are trying adopt the same model, once we have that, a lot of private money will pour into government and these federations will not really need government.
The less government [financial support] you have in sports development, the better it is.”
