The management of Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi have congratulated Nasarawa United on their qualification to the NNL Super 8. This message was contained in a press release and comes shortly after a viral Facebook post almost ruined the relationship between both clubs.
On Saturday, a pseudo Facebook page with the name “Nasarawa United” posted a picture of Wikki’s logo, mocking them for not qualifying for the NNL Super 8 tournament, thereby losing the chance for a comeback to the NPFL.
With officials of Wikki Tourists already considering their options, Nasarawa United released a strong statement dissociating themselves from the Facebook page, a move which excited Wikki Tourists.
“Our attention was drawn to the purported write up attributed to your team, however your quick response dissociating your club from the fake account is a welcome development and has put to rest our initial worries over the post.
Wikki Tourists FC wish to congratulate Nasarawa United for picking one of the slots to Super Eight play-off and wish you well.”
The Facebook post by the individual handler of the pseudo page raised dust and was condemned by football fans who said it was banter taken too far. The handler of the page has since apologized to the public.
Before the game involving Nasarawa United and Zamfara United, an unknown writer had called on the NNL body to monitor the game, alleging possibility of match fixing which would knock Wikki Tourists out of contention for a return to the elite league, a post which was reportedly spread across Whatsapp platforms. After the game, the said Facebook post made people in Bauchi’s camp to raise eyebrows but Nasarawa United’s quick disclaimer saved the day.
Wikki Tourists advised Nasarawa United to take drastic action in order to forestall a future reoccurrence.
